What is Sustainable Wood?
5 Minute Read
One thing we can all agree on is that we, as a species, need to be more aware of nature, the world and our responsibilities. So, you’re probably here looking for more information on sustainable wood and what makes it sustainable?
Sustainable wood comes from sustainably managed forests. It’s a renewable resource thanks to the forest stewards managing the landscape to prevent damage to the eco-systems, wildlife, watersheds and the trees themselves. The aim is to take a long view of where our wood comes from rather than the short term.
This means by managing and taking wood in a sustainable manner, those forests should still be there for your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and…well you get the picture.
Why is Sustainable Wood Important?
It’s a great question and one of the most pressing in modern times. Unsustainable sourcing of wood & other materials lead to:
🌲 Deforestation
🌍 Damage to our eco-system
🐒 Extinction of native species
☁ Increased CO2
And as we know, trees are the lungs of the world, they reduce CO2 and pump our lovely atmosphere with oxygen, and we all love oxygen right?
Sustainable sources of wood ensures that the forests we take wood from will continue to flourish and keeping our world in check. Ultimately unsustainable logging of wood is not only going to ruin our environments but ultimately the whole wood supply chain will be destroyed.
What Wood do we use?
We could not write an article like this if we weren’t proudly using sustainable wood, right? And we are really proud of the timber we use!
All our Rustic wood is sourced from FSC certified Northern Scandinavian Pine forests. So as well as each piece of wood being handpicked by our craftsman for your order, you can be assured you’re getting a piece of fine timber that has being carefully and sustainably sourced.
FSC Certification
The FSC is a global body which certifies sustainable wood sources based on a high level of standards which must be met. By using FSC wood you’re ensuring the forests of which the wood is sourced meets the FSC standards and has been independently certified by a FSC accredited body.
Forests that are used for wood harvesting only have a few trees taken from each section. This allows the forests native Animals & Habitats to continue to thrive. This patch of land wont be harvested again for 30 years.
We are very proud of the quality and the ethical source of our wood, if you’re interested in learning more about our sustainability program please view our sustainability page.
