Mantel Sizing Guide
Length
The length of your mantel depends on how much of the fireplace you’d like it to cover or reveal at the sides. There are three common options:
- Full Length – Covers the entire width of the fireplace wall.
- Equidistant – Equal spacing on either side of the firebox.
- Firebox Length – Matches the width of the firebox only.
For visual examples, refer to the Style Options section below.
Height
When determining height, consider:
- Visual Alignment - Match the height of your mantel to the height of surrounding materials (like 6" stone pieces) for a seamless look.
-
Proportion: Keep the mantel’s height in balance with its depth and length.
Rule of thumb: The height should be at least half the depth.
Example: A 10" deep mantel should be no less than 5" tall to avoid looking too thin or out of proportion.
Style Options
Full Length Mantel
A full length mantel runs the entire width of the fireplace face, from edge to edge.
This style works well when your fireplace is framed by architectural elements like built-in cabinets or bookshelves. The result is a bold, commanding look that becomes a strong focal point in the room.

Equidistant Mantel
An equidistant mantel is centred within the fireplace face, with equal spacing of stone, brick, or tile on either side.
This is the most common mantel length, offering a balanced and symmetrical appearance.
Note:
There’s no strict rule for how much space to leave on each side—it comes down to your personal preference. Aim for proportions that enhance your fireplace without overpowering it.

Firebox Length Mantel
A firebox length mantel matches the exact width of the firebox below it.
This style creates a minimalist, streamlined appearance and is ideal for smaller spaces or rooms where the fireplace is a secondary feature—such as in spaces dominated by windows or open layouts.
